Case Study: Finding Steadiness Again After a Distressing Life Event
Client Overview / Challenge
A client in her 40s came to me after a sudden, deeply upsetting experience that completely knocked her off balance. She didn’t feel like herself. Her mind kept dragging her back into the moment, replaying it, twisting it, making her question everything she thought she knew about herself.
On the outside, she was still functioning, going to work, keeping up with responsibilities, but inside she felt shaky and overwhelmed. She described moments where her thoughts would suddenly tighten around her, pulling her into spirals she couldn’t seem to interrupt. Her chest would tense, her breathing would change, and she’d feel as though she was bracing for something that wasn’t actually happening. Even when she was safe, her body didn’t quite believe it. She also found herself doubting her own judgement in ways she never had before.
She told me it felt like “my brain keeps pulling me down a hole I don’t want to go into,” and she was exhausted from trying to climb back out every time.
RTT® Hypnotherapy Approach
We worked gently from the very beginning. There was no pressure to “move on” or tidy anything up. Instead, we created enough space for her to breathe and understand what her mind was doing and why it felt so relentless. This is the kind of work I often do with clients experiencing fear‑based reactions, when the nervous system is still responding as though the difficult moment is happening right now.
During the RTT® session, we explored the emotional shock and the beliefs that had formed in the middle of all that fear and guilt. She began to see that her reactions weren’t signs of weakness, they were her mind trying to make sense of something overwhelming.
Over the following weeks, she listened to her personalised recording every day, often in the evenings when her thoughts were at their loudest. She practised simple grounding tools that helped her steady herself when she felt the spiral starting. And in our weekly follow-up calls, she talked through what felt different, what still felt stuck, and what was slowly easing.
Nothing dramatic. Just steady, consistent support while her nervous system found its way back to solid ground.
